Karen Guthrie has worked with schools and colleges for over 30 years and has been a leader of ICT support services for schools for the last 25. She started her career with East Sussex County Council and moved to the newly formed Brighton & Hove City Council in 1997 where she set up, from scratch, a successful team offering a broad range of IT services. Over 4 years Karen expanded the team’s remit to include professional CPD, IT support in the curriculum, training, consultancy and advisory service for Information Governance and Data Protection. Karen’s team has carried out countless school compliance health checks, helping Senior Leadership teams and school staff to understand their responsibilities under the law and how to boost their compliance and safeguard the data they control. The team has supported schools through complex Freedom of Information and Subject Access Requests. During the run up to GDPR its experts have been in great demand delivering briefings to Head Teachers, Business Managers and other school leaders. A qualified teacher and trainer, Karen now has a remit for leading traded IT & Digital professional advisory and consultancy services across the Orbis Partnership, a shared service partnership between East Sussex, Surrey and Brighton and Hove Councils. New Data Protection Legislation (GDPR)
The aim of this session is to encourage schools to examine how far they have progressed with the important areas of change required by the new legislation and how compliant they are following its introduction in May this year (2018).
The key areas of discussion will centre on:
-The role of the Data Protection Officer and the practicalities and challenges faced by schools in complying with the requirement to designate a DPO. What solutions are available?
